Trans Health
Trans Health refers to the specific health needs of transgendered individuals. Transgendered people need general healthcare, just like cisgendered people, but they may also have additional needs relating to their particular gender identity. This is sometimes referred to as gender-affirming care. Some transgendered individuals make the choice to transition to align with their gender identity, through hormone therapy, puberty blockers, social affirmation, and/or surgery. A large hurdle that transgendered people face is finding qualified providers that are sensitive to and supportive of trans health needs. The purpose of this guide is to aid clinicians in locating resources relating to care of transgendered people.
Gender-affirming care affects many facets of transgender health, but mental health outcomes are of critical importance. The Trevor Project's National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health 2021 reported that "42% of LGBTQ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, including more than half of transgender and nonbinary youth" and that "transgender and nonbinary youth who had access to spaces that affirmed their sexual orientation and gender identity reported lower rates of attempting suicide."
