Behind the Paywall: Accessing Articles

This guide provides strategies for accessing full-text scholarly resources when faced with paywalls. Learn about library tools, open access options, and best practices for locating research beyond subscription barriers.

Suggestion 3: Request an Interlibrary Loan

Have No Fear, ILL is Here

If you are unable to find your article on our online library catalog, your second course of action will be getting an interlibrary loan – otherwise known as ILL.

ILL provides access to materials (print only books, e-book chapters, articles, theses, dissertations, and various forms of media) not owned by the Lewis Library.

After submitting your request, you can expect to receive your materials within 1-4 business days.

Pricing:

► If you are currently affiliated with UNT Health, there is a $0 base fee

► If you are an alumni, retiree, or board member, there is a $5 base fee.

► If you are a Texas-based patient care provider, part of a nonprofit organization, or a member of the general public, there is a $10 base fee.

► If you are working for a law firm, corporation, or for-profit research company, there is a $40 base fee.

While it may sound intimidating to borrow materials from a library you are unfamiliar with, this process is actually quite simple. Watch the video below for more details.
