This guide provides strategies for accessing full-text scholarly resources when faced with paywalls. Learn about library tools, open access options, and best practices for locating research beyond subscription barriers.

What are paywalls?

About Paywalls

A paywall is a digital barrier that restricts your access to resources, such as journal articles. In order for you to view the full text, paywalls will usually ask you to pay a one-time fee or sign up for a recurring subscription. Below is an example of what you may come across when searching for research materials online, especially through publisher websites and search engines (Google Scholar, PubMed, JSTOR, ResearchGate, etc).

These barriers can be frustrating, especially when you're on a time crunch... but don't worry! Rest assured that as an UNT Health student, you have many alternative ways to access scholarly resources.

The Gilson D. Lewis Library provides students access through institutional subscriptions, interlibrary loan (ILL), and other tools that can help you locate open access versions of the content you need.
